V day is fast approaching: you’ve seen all the cheesy cards and the usual adverts for another dull candlelit dinner that will make you puke. Yet you’re an incurable romantic and since this year Valentine’s day is falling on a Sunday (and you are in Berlin), you would like to do something different…or maybe you just feel romantic but don’t have a date.

Whatever your situation, you’re in the right place! We put together some lovely things to do in Berlin when you’re feeling romantic, and you can do these either with your lover, a friend or by yourself…Berlin is your oyster!

♥ TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE OF TEMPELHOFER FELD: The former airport is now a huge park and it’s worth a visit in any season. Bring blankets and hot drinks (these include glühwein) and watch the sunset or the kites go by. This is one my absolute favourite things to do in Berlin, I love Tempelhof both in summer and winter, and so does my dog!

♥ GO TO A JAZZ GIG: Berlin has a big jazz scene and is full with talented musicians from all over the world. If you fancy a cozy and easygoing evening with live jazz but don’t know where to start, jam sessions happen several times a week, they are usually free and also unpredictable! For example B Flat in Mitte hosts a jam session every Wednesday, and since this year Valentine’s day is on a Sunday, try the cozy Mokkabar in Kreuzberg, which hosts one every Sunday.

♥ VISIT PEACOCK ISLAND (PFAUENINSEL): Set on the Havel river, Peacock Island is a hidden Berlin gem. Deriving the name from its many feathered inhabitants, the small island is a wildlife sanctuary and nature reserve since 1924. Its castle is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is reachable by ferry all year round from Wannsee S-Bahn (please note: dogs and bikes are not allowed on the island). For ferry timetables see below:

November until February: Mon – Sun: 10am – 4pm
March and October: Mon – Sun: 9am – 6pm
April and September: Mon – Sun: 9am – 7pm
May to August: Mo – So: 8am – 9pm

♥ GO SEE A BURLESQUE SHOW: Berlin has a lot of naughty fun on offer, but if you want something glamorous too, what better way than watch one of the many burlesque shows on offer wearing your favourite pin-up dress!? This Valentine‘s you can enjoy Sunday Soiree in Friedrichshain’s Primitiv Bar.

♥ HIKE UP TEUFELSBERG: Leave your heels at home and hike up this hill made out of World War II rubble. From this surreal place you have breathtaking views of the whole of Berlin as well as Grunewald. Although now in a state of decay, you can still take a guided tour of the unmissable remnant of the Cold War, a giant ‘listening station’ built by the Americans in the 1950s. Teufelsseechaussee 10 14193 Berlin Wilmersdorf.

♥ GET STEAMY AT A SPA:  Is there anything more romantic than sweating in the nude with a lover, rubbing honey on each other’s backs after a good old AufgussBerlin has some good spas, which are open until late. Week-ends tend to be busy so try mid week evenings. Vabali is a gorgeous Balinese spa, while the much smaller Liquidrome  has a floating pool with underwater music.

♥ HIRE A VINTAGE CAR AND RIDE AROUND BERLIN IN STYLE: We find the idea of hiring a vintage car to cruise around the city quite charming. Especially when the car is a Fiat 600!! There is a company who does just that, and they are called Vintage Ride. Check them out for prices and availability.

♥ DRINK LIKE OSCAR WILDE AT THE ABSINTHE DEPOT: The Absinthe Depot is a Berlin institution and a unique bar, stocking over 100 types of Absinthe. It is also one of the few last standing bars with character in Mitte, so get your fineries on and go sip some green fairy with a lover or friend, paying homage to Oscar Wilde or Toulouse Lautrec, famous purveyors of this most intoxicating of drinks! Absinthe Depot Weinmeisterstraße 4, 10178 Berlin (closed on Sundays).

♥ LEARN SOME MATING RITUALS AT THE BERLIN ZOO: Although the famous Berlin zoo is a main tourist attraction, it is still worth a visit if you want to have a romantic and fun day out! Just make sure you get your tickets in advance. You may even be lucky and learn new tricks from various mating ritualsZoo Berlin Hardenbergplatz 8, 10787 Berlin.

♥ DRESS UP AND GO SEE SOME CLASSIC CARS: Whether you’re interested in old motors or vintage clothing, the two combined together make for a romantic day out and many fabulous photo opportunities! Classic Remise Berlin in Wedding makes this possible. Should you feel peckish they also have a restaurant.
